Dropped Stitches in Tennessee History

John Allison began learning Tennessee history at his mother's knee, and by 1897 he had spent decades collecting what official archives ignored: the stories of ordinary settlers, the texture of frontier life itself. Drawing on original court records from Jonesborough (1778-1800) and interviews with elderly residents who remembered the generation before, Allison reconstructs a Tennessee before it became a state. The book follows young Andrew Jackson's arrival as a frontier attorney in Jonesboro, but more importantly, it preserves names that history nearly erased: Hump Gibson, the Widow Dyckes, and dozens of others who appear only in the yellowed docket entries of Washington's earliest court. This is not comprehensive history. It is something rarer: a living memory of the people who built upper East Tennessee when it was still the western frontier, preserved before the last witnesses fell silent.
