Dream of the Red Chamber Book I

Dream of the Red Chamber, also known as The Story of the Stone, is a seminal work of Chinese literature written by Cao Xueqin in the 18th century. This novel follows the Chia family, focusing on the life of Chia Pao-yü, an intelligent but carefree heir, and his complex relationships with his cousins, particularly Lin Tai-yü and Hsüeh Pao-ch'ai. The narrative explores themes of love, wealth, and the decline of the family, culminating in their eventual downfall. The book consists of 120 chapters, with only the first 80 completed by Cao before his death in 1764, and was later published in a complete version in 1791 by Cheng Weiyuan and Gao E.
