Down the Snow Stairs; Or, from Good-Night to Good-Morning
1886
Christmas Eve, and eight-year-old Kitty cannot sleep. Below stairs, her little brother Johnny lies feverish and critically ill, his condition the direct result of her own thoughtlessness. Guilt gnaws at her as the house sleeps, and when sleep finally comes, she is drawn into Naughty Children Land, a strange dream-realm where childhood transgressions take tangible form. There she meets Daddy Coax, whose tender-heartedness borders on weakness, handing out candy and toys to bad children in a futile attempt to coax them toward goodness. But it is the Lady Love who holds the true promise: the kiss of forgiveness, the chance to return to the Path of Obedience. To win the Christmas blessing and make amends, Kitty must resist the seductive temptations of this magical world and prove she has learned what it means to be responsible for those she loves. A Victorian fantasy of guilt, temptation, and the redemptive power of genuine remorse.
