Donahey's Cartoons

Turn back the clock to 1900 and you'll find the same small joys and small troubles that make modern life ridiculous and wonderful. J.H. Donahey's cartoons capture the universal comedy of everyday existence: family dynamics that haven't changed in a century, the particular chaos of holidays, the way seasons shift our moods and mishaps. These aren't elaborate gags or topical jokes that would grow stale. They're observations so perfectly plain and exaggerated at once that you'll recognize your own life in them. A man wrestling with an umbrella in a gust, a household stirred into frenzy by some minor crisis, the particular exhaustion of social obligations. Donahey drew with a gentle hand and a sharp eye, finding the absurd in the ordinary and the tender in the ridiculous. These cartoons remind us that human nature hasn't evolved much in 124 years. We're still kin through our shared quirks, our shared frustrations, our shared ability to laugh at ourselves.
