Dew Drops, Vol. 37, No. 07, February 15, 1914

A little time capsule of early 1914, this Valentine's Day issue of Dew Drops magazine offers a window into what Edwardian children read and dreamed about. The stories cluster around acts of creative love: a boy named Arthur discovers the joy of making valentines by hand for everyone he knows, while a girl named Blanca faces down danger to save a litter of kittens. These aren't sophisticated tales, but they carry the earnest sweetness of an era that believed in teaching children that love, expressed boldly, could change things. The poetry punctuates the volume with verses about friendship, lonely hearts, and the simple pleasure of making someone smile. Characters send cards to the sick and the isolated. Kindness is not presented as moralizing but as the natural way one moves through the world. For readers who enjoy historical children's literature, or parents seeking wholesome stories to share, this collection offers a charming artifact of American periodical publishing from a century ago. It captures a moment when Valentine's Day was still largely a children's holiday in America, and the most exciting thing a young person could do in mid-February was decorate a card for someone they loved.
