Desiderius Erasmus of Rotterdam

Erasmus was the intellectual star of the Northern Renaissance, a man who shaped the ideas that would explode into the Protestant Reformation while remaining fiercely independent of any faction. Born probably in 1466 in Rotterdam, he rose from humble origins to become the most celebrated scholar in Europe, a Latinist who could make the Church Fathers speak with new clarity and a satirist who could make the powerful squirm. Emerton's biography traces this remarkable arc: the rebellious monk who resisted the rigid confines of monastic life, the scholar who mastered Greek and Hebrew to return to the sources of Christianity, the advisor to kings and popes who refused every offer of ecclesiastical preferment in favor of hard-won independence. What emerges is a portrait of a thinker who believed reform could come through scholarship and piety rather than schism, yet watched helplessly as the forces he unleashed swept beyond his control. This book captures the drama of a man who stood at the hinge of history, beloved and reviled, too radical for conservatives and too cautious for reformers.
