Der Trotzkopf: Eine Pensionsgeschichte Für Erwachsene Mädchen
1885
At fifteen, Ilse Macket is ungovernable. Raised wild on her father's Pomeranian estate after her mother's death, she has spent her childhood riding horses, resisting every governess, and making her stepmother's life distinctly uncomfortable. When "Frau Anne" and the local pastor finally convince her father to ship Ilse off to a boarding school, she arrives at Fräulein Raimar's Pensionat convinced she will terrorize this new world as she has all the others. Instead, she finds something more dangerous than any governess: a story about a girl whose defiance drove away the man she loved, condemning herself to a life of teaching. This parable, delivered at her moment of greatest shame after a public humiliation, cracks something open in Ilse. What follows is not a simple capitulation but a gradual, hard-won transformation as she learns needlework and drawing, befriends a future governess and a dying classmate, and discovers that strength and softness are not opposites. By the time she meets the district chief's son on her way home, Ilse has not been tamed. She has chosen to become something new.
