Der Totentanz
1875
Der Totentanz (The Dance of Death) is a序列 of forty-one masterfully executed woodcuts by Hans Holbein the Younger, first published in 1538. Each image depicts Death arriving unexpectedly for figures across every rung of medieval society: popes and peasants, emperors and children, merchants and monks. The skeletal figure of Death appears not as a horror, but as an inevitability, gently or urgently drawing its victims into a dance that none can refuse. Holbein's genius lies in his democratic mortality: the king loses his crown, the baby loses its cradle, the lawyer his brief, all in the same visual language of stark simplicity and uncanny tenderness. These are not merely memento mori; they are savage social satire, exposing how wealth, power, and piety mean nothing when the dance begins. Five centuries later, these images still pierce because they tell an uncomfortable truth we still refuse to accept.
