Der Occultismus Des Altertums

First published in 1895, this landmark work by the German theosophist Karl Kiesewetter represents one of the earliest systematic attempts to document the occult traditions of the ancient world. Written with scholarly rigor yet tinged with the mystical enthusiasm of its era, the book ranges across the Akkadians, Babylonians, Chaldeans, Assyrians, and later the Greeks, Romans, and Germanic peoples, tracing how magic, divination, and supernatural belief evolved across millennia. Kiesewetter draws on the recently excavated fragments from the library of Nineveh, contemporaneous archaeological discoveries, and classical sources to construct a picture of ancient magic that treats its subjects not as superstition but as serious religious and philosophical systems. The text moves from broad cultural surveys to focused investigations of particular figures (Pythagoras, Socrates, the Gnostics), practices (oracles, healing rituals, astral magic), and doctrines (creation mythology, afterlife beliefs). Completed after Kiesewetter's premature death by the scholar Ludwig Kuhlenbeck, this work remains a fascinating artifact of late 19th-century esoteric scholarship, revealing both what Victorians understood about ancient mysticism and how they interpreted it through the lens of Theosophy and romantic occultism.
