Denslow's Three Bears

This is the book that helped invent American picture books as we know them. Published in 1901, W.W. Denslow's retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears became the first American picture book to sell over a million copies, a phenomenon that proved illustrated stories could be a literary and commercial force. Denslow didn't merely illustrate the classic fairy tale, he brought it to vivid, theatrical life through bold, character-rich illustrations that practically leap from the page. The story follows Goldilocks as she wanders into the Three Bears' cottage, sampling their porridge, collapsing into their chairs, and falling asleep in their beds, until the bears return to find an intruder in their house. It endures as a foundational text in children's publishing, a charming artifact from the early days of American picture books, and a demonstration of how illustrations can tell stories as powerfully as words.
