De Ondergang Der Eerste Wareld

Willem Bilderdijk's 1810 epic reimagines the biblical narrative of creation and the fall with the sweeping ambition of Milton's Paradise Lost. Written in heroic verse, the poem follows Adam and Eve from their divine innocence through their transgression and into the ruinous aftermath that cascades through generations. But this is more than a retelling: Bilderdijk uses the fall of the first world to grapple with questions that haunted the Romantic age. What is the weight of ancestral sin? Can redemption emerge from spiritual devastation? How does civilization rebuild from the ruins of its own making? The poem pulses with emotional intensity, particularly in its portrayals of Adam and Eve grappling with shame, loss, and the altered nature of existence. Written during a period Bilderdijk perceived as hostile to poetic taste, the work carries a defiant reverence for language as a vehicle of transcendent truth. It endures not as mere religious instruction but as a profound meditation on human frailty and the stubborn persistence of hope.
