Days to Remember: The British Empire in the Great War

Written in the aftermath of the Great War, this 1922 account captures the British Empire's role in the conflict while the memory of it remained painfully immediate. The narrative traces the chain of events that pulled Britain into war: the web of European alliances, the assassination in Sarajevo, and Germany's violation of Belgian neutrality. But the book is really about something larger: a worldwide empire mobilizing its far-flung forces, from Canadian doughboys to Australian diggers, all fighting under the Union Jack. The author details the major campaigns and the strategic calculations that shaped them, offering a perspective that treats the war as a genuinely imperial undertaking rather than merely a European conflict. For readers interested in how the First World War was understood in its immediate aftermath, before the war's full trauma had been processed, this volume provides a fascinating window into that transitional moment between participant and memory.
