One of the earliest published works by a Native American author, David Cusick's 1827 account offers an unparalleled window into Haudenosaunee cosmology, history, and governance. The book opens with a creation myth that traces the foundation of the Great Island, what settlers would later call North America, through the cosmic struggle between twin brothers Enigorio (the good mind) and Enigonhahgetgea (the bad mind), whose divergent visions shaped the world. This is not anthropology from an outside observer; it is history as the Tuscarora artist understood it, preserving oral traditions and tribal knowledge at a moment when Indigenous cultures faced unprecedented pressure. The narrative then moves through the early settlers of the continent, recounting conflicts with giants and inter-tribal tensions, before arriving at the origin of the Five Nations and their revolutionary confederacy, called the Long House, a political alliance that predated and in many ways confounded European democratic ideals. Cusick writes of warfare, fierce animals, and the fragile equilibria that held the nations together. The work matters because it is a primary source: a 200-year-old Indigenous voice speaking across centuries about who the Haudenosaunee are and where they came from. It is essential reading for anyone interested in early American history, Native American literature, or the preservation of Indigenous knowledge.
