Darwinism and Race Progress

A bracing, Victorian-era intervention into the era's most urgent question: could modern civilization rescue the human race from biological decline? Haycraft, a distinguished physiologist, mounts a rigorous argument that moral and intellectual progress need not translate into racial vitality. Drawing on the ancient world, he traces the rise and fall of civilizations, Egypt, Greece, Rome, before turning to the provocative claim that political collapse does not equal racial extinction. The Scandinavians and Jews endure, he argues, as proof that certain stocks persist independent of empire. But Haycraft's true target is modern society itself: medicine preserves the weak, civilization shelters the unfit, and the 'capables' are being outbred by the 'incapables.' Written with the confidence of a man who believes science holds humanity's future in its hands, this is a disturbing window into the intellectual machinery that would shape the twentieth century's darkest movements, told with absolute conviction and no reservation whatsoever.
