Dardistan in 1866, 1886 and 1893

In the remote highlands where Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China converge, a Victorian scholar documented civilizations that had lived in isolation for centuries. G.W. Leitner's monumental work compiles three decades of research into the forgotten kingdoms of Dardistan, capturing Gilgit, Chilas, and surrounding valleys at a moment before the modern world arrived. Through meticulous fieldwork, he recorded the region's intricate religious traditions, epic legends, folktales passed down for generations, and songs that had never been written down. This is anthropological archaeology of the highest order: a window into mountain cultures that would soon be transformed by empire, war, and the 20th century's relentless march. The text includes detailed appendices on recent events, maps, and numerous illustrations that bring this vanished world into vivid focus. For readers drawn to imperial history, early anthropology, or the poetry of lost cultures, this volume offers something rare: the authentic voice of a place that exists now only in memory, preserved by a scholar who understood he was documenting something precious and ephemeral.
