Daniel Hjort is a historical tragedy written by Finnish-Swedish playwright J. J. Wecksell, first performed in 1862. Set against the backdrop of the siege of Turku Castle in 1597, the play explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the struggle for power through the character of Daniel Hjort, a 'foundling' grappling with his identity. Notably, the work reflects the democratic aspirations of Wecksell's time and is considered one of the most significant Swedish dramatic works prior to August Strindberg.
