Dame Duck's First Lecture on Education

Dame Duck hatches her brood of ducklings and immediately begins their education. The lessons are both practical and peculiar: how to waddle in a straight line, how to swim without fear, how to eat properly in the presence of other fowls, how to navigate the social hierarchy of the pond. Each instruction comes with Dame Duck's patient demonstration and her expectations of proper duck behavior. The narrative pulses with gentle humor and earnest Victorian moralizing, revealing that education in this era meant far more than arithmetic or reading. It meant learning to perform one's place in the world with grace and propriety. For contemporary readers, the book offers a window into 19th-century childhood and the particular anxieties of middle-class respectability, all rendered through the amusing lens of waterfowl learning to be ducks.
