Curious Church Customs and Cognate Subjects

Churches, we assume, were always places of hushed reverence. But for centuries, they were also venues for football, scenes of raucous parish festivals, and sites where boys briefly ruled as bishops. This delightful volume unearths the wild, forgotten customs that once animated Christian worship, revealing a religious world far stranger and more human than we imagine. From the medieval tradition of the Boy-Bishop, who commanded the diocese for a day, to the ringing of bells for purposes far removed from the call to prayer, the book traces how sacred spaces served as theaters for community life, sporting contests, and superstition. Written by period experts, it maps the gradual suppression of these practices as the church tightened its grip on decorum, yet preserves them here as evidence of a faith that was once inseparable from the textured fabric of popular life. For readers who suspect history is stranger than they were taught, this book offers proof.
