Curiosities of Christian History Prior to the Reformation

Long before Christianity became a European institution, it was a dangerous underground movement. James Paterson's 1611 history excavates the strange, violent, and luminous early centuries of the faith, from the execution of Christ to the catacombs where martyrs died singing. This is not the Christianity of cathedrals and councils, but of slaves, exiles, and forgotten saints whose legends still flicker at the edges of tradition. Paterson weaves through the lives of the apostles, the mysterious traditions surrounding the Virgin Mary, and the blood-soaked arenas where believers faced lions rather than renounce what they had seen. The book captures a faith still finding itself, shaped by persecution, prophecy, and the desperate hope that the resurrection was real. For readers curious about where Christianity came from before it became Christendom, these pages offer a window into a world both alien and startlingly familiar.
