Croquet: As Played by the Newport Croquet Club

Croquet arrived in America in the 1860s as more than a game. It was a social ritual, a genteel excuse for outdoor leisure, and a marker of civilized refinement. This manual from the Newport Croquet Club captures that particular world: the carefully manicured lawns, the Whiffle, the Roquet, the intricate dance of wickets and balls that demanded both precision and propriety. The author wrote because existing guides failed the rising enthusiasm, and so this book emerged to codify not just how to play, but how to play correctly, how to conduct oneself on the field, how to enjoy healthy exercise without abandoning ladylike or gentlemanly composure. The text moves from technical vocabulary through equipment specifications to rule-by-rule instruction, peppered with practical hints for beginners learning to coordinate their shots. Reading it now feels like stepping onto a Victorian lawn at golden hour, watching the well-dressed participants deliberate over each stroke with the gravity of parliament. It endures for anyone curious about how Victorians played, what they valued in recreation, or the strange beauty of rules written for a game most people today only vaguely remember.
