Crimen del Padre Amaro
Crimen del Padre Amaro, originally titled O Crime do Padre Amaro, is a novel by Portuguese author José Maria de Eça de Queirós published in 1875. It is recognized as the first Portuguese realist novel and sparked significant controversy for its critique of social and religious hypocrisy. The first complete and official translation was done by Valle-Inclán between 1901 and 1902, correcting previous incomplete and biased translations. The novel remains notable for its bold exploration of moral issues within the context of 19th-century Portuguese society.
