Craven's Part in the Great War

The Yorkshire valleys that produced these men had never seen a war like this. John T. Clayton's meticulous account preserves the names, stories, and sacrifices of the Craven Territorials, the 6th Battalion Duke of Wellington's Regiment, who answered mobilization orders in 1914 and marched into a conflict that would consume an entire generation. This is local history at its most profound. Clayton traces the battalion from the quiet villages and market towns of North Yorkshire through training camps and into the Somme, Passchendaele, and the grueling battles that defined the war's final years. What emerges is more than military chronology. Through casualty lists, personal accounts, and community records, we see the war's human cost measured in specific names and places: the farmer's son from Grassington, the schoolteacher from Skipton, the brothers who never came home. The book stands as a collective memorial, ensuring that a community's grief and courage are not forgotten. For readers interested in WWI, regional British history, or the archaeology of memory itself, this volume offers an intimate window into how ordinary people experienced extraordinary times.
