Cowley's Talks on Doctrine

Matthias F. Cowley, one of the original Twelve Apostles of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, delivers a series of passionate discourses that shaped early twentieth-century Mormon thought. Written in 1902, these talks offer an intimate窗口 into how LDS leaders understood their faith's foundational claims: that the original church established by Christ fell into apostasy, that divine authority was restored through Joseph Smith, and that modern prophets continue to receive revelation for these latter days. Cowley writes with the conviction of a man who believed he spoke for God, weaving biblical proof-texts with emotional appeals to testify of the Restoration's truth. The book captures a particular moment in American religious history, when Mormonism was still defining itself against intense external pressure and articulating its distinctive doctrines to both believers and skeptics. For readers interested in understanding how turn-of-the-century Latter-day Saints reasoned about their faith, or for those seeking primary sources from early LDS leadership, these talks provide invaluable insight into the theological vocabulary and argumentative style of the era.
