Cousin Hatty's Hymns and Twilight Stories

This little volume began as something far more intimate than a book. Most of its gentle verses were written for a single, beloved child, with no ambition beyond her smile. Only at the urging of friends did the author allow these hymns and stories to venture into the world, hoping other children might find the same joy. What emerges is a tender portrait of Victorian childhood faith: hymns that view God's creation through wonder-filled young eyes, paired with moral tales where kind hearts are rewarded and disobedience carries quiet consequences. Children meet animals who teach gentleness, witness the beauty of changing seasons, and encounter familiar biblical figures. There is nothing heavy-handed here no lecturing, no stern moralizing. Instead, the lessons unfold like a parent settling a child into bed, one hand on the quilt, voice soft with love. For modern readers, the charm lies in its innocence and its age. Here is a doorway into a world where childhood was brief, faith was simple, and a book could be written for one person and still reach many.
