Morris, Alexander: 1826-1889. Member of Legislative Assembly of Canada, 1861-1872; appointed chief justice of Manitoba Court of Queen's Bench, 1872; few months later appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Manitoba and NWT and during term of office negotiated the more important of the First Nations treaties in NWT, 1872-1877; returned to Ontario (Wallace, Dictionary of Canadian biography ).
