Continental Stagecraft

In 1921, a young American theater practitioner crossed the Atlantic with a question that would define the next century of stagecraft: what happens when the European stage stops trying to imitate life and starts trying to reveal the mind? Kenneth Macgowan's landmark treatise documents his journey through the theaters of Paris, Berlin, and Vienna at the exact moment when realism was giving way to expressionism, when designers were abandoning painted backdrops for angular scaffolding, and when the very purpose of the stage was being rethought. This isn't a dry academic survey. It's a firsthand account of standing in the wings during a revolution, watching the old order crumble and something raw and terrifying take its place. Macgowan writes about lighting that could make actors look like Expressionist paintings, sets that dissolved spatial logic, and directors who cared more about inner truth than outer imitation. For anyone interested in where modern theater came from, this book is a time machine.
