Condensed History of the Mexican War and Its Glorious Results

Published in 1902, this is a veteran soldier's fiercely patriotic account of the Mexican-American War, written with the unblinking conviction of a man who believed manifest destiny was both righteous and inevitable. Daniel E. Hungerford served as a Union soldier decades after the Mexican conflict ended, but this book captures something invaluable: the way mid-century Americans remembered and celebrated that war's campaigns, from Zachary Taylor's northern battles to Winfield Scott's march on Mexico City. The prose crackles with jingoistic pride as it recounts soldier valor, strategic brilliance, and the acquisition of vast southwestern territories. What makes this volume particularly striking for modern readers is its unapologetic celebration of expansion as 'glorious results' - language that now carries uncomfortable colonial weight. Hungerford weaves in reminiscences from fellow veterans, creating a document that is part military chronicle, part nostalgic tribute to a lost generation of fighters. It stands as a fascinating primary source for understanding how Americans once framed a war that stripped Mexico of half its nation and inaugurated decades of border-region conflict.
