Composed Among the Ruins of a Castle in North Wales

Composed Among the Ruins of a Castle in North Wales

William Wordsworth

Written among the crumbling stones of a Welsh fortress, this poem distills the Romantic obsession with decay, memory, and the unbearable distance between what was and what is. Wordsworth stands amid the ruins, but the true collapse he mourns is spiritual: the passing of chivalry, the erosion of old certainties, the way time reduces even the proudest monuments to silence and ivy. The poem carries what the Welsh call hiraeth that profound ache of longing for a homeland that exists only in memory, or perhaps never existed at all. In just a few stark stanzas, Wordsworth transforms a pile of stones into a meditation on everything we lose simply by living: youth, glory, the belief that anything lasts. It is brief, but it cuts deep.
