Long before Yellowstone became America's first national park, a ragged band of fur trappers walked through its geysers and canyons and told anyone who would listen what they had seen. Nobody believed them. For thirty years, their stories of boiling rivers and stone forests were called lies, tall tales, the ravings of men who had spent too long alone in the wilderness. Then in 1870, a military expedition 'discovered' what these trappers had already described and claimed the credit for bringing Yellowstone to the world's attention. Merrill J. Mattes, a pioneering National Park Service historian, reconstructs the forgotten legacy of men like John Colter, the Lewis and Clark veteran who wandered this landscape around 1808 and gave it a name that stuck: Colter's Hell. Through meticulous research in fur company records, journals, and the fragments that survived, Mattes traces how trappers explored every corner of what would become Yellowstone and Grand Teton, often starving, often frostbitten, always chasing beaver for a market that would eventually collapse. The book unpacks how these first eyes on the American landscape were written out of history, dismissed while later explorers took bows for 'discovering' what had already been mapped in trapper memory. This is essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how America learns to see its own wilderness, and who gets credit for looking.
