Clear Crystals

These poems ache with the particular tenderness of wartime America. Written in the shadow of World War II, Clara Frances McKee Beede captures what it meant to wait, to hope, to love across the distance of war. Her verses move between the intimate (a mother's prayer for her son, a soldier writing home) and the eternal (the turning of seasons, the persistence of beauty against loss). This is not poetry of grand gestures but of small, sacred things: the light through a window, the memory of home, the prayer that leaves lips for a God who may be listening. Beede writes with quiet courage, finding spirituality not in certainty but in the searching. The collection feels like a window into a generation that carried fear and hope in equal measure, that celebrated simple joys because they understood how quickly those joys could be taken. For readers who love wartime poetry, for those exploring how ordinary people made sense of extraordinary times, Clear Crystals offers both intimacy and insight.
