Chushingura; Or, The Treasury of Loyal Retainers

In 1701, the young daimyō Asano Naganori is provoked into drawing his blade against a court official, a fatal mistake. Ordered to commit seppuku, he leaves behind forty-seven masterless samurai, rōnin stripped of their lord, their purpose, their honor. For nearly two years they endure humiliation and wait in silence, planning in shadow. Then, on a snowy winter night, they strike, storming the enemy compound in one of history's most legendary acts of loyal fury. This theatrical masterpiece transforms historical tragedy into something that transcends time: a fierce meditation on what loyalty means when all authority has been taken, on the terrible weight of duty, and on forty-seven men who chose death over a life without honor. The play that defined Japanese drama, and a story that asks what we owe to those we serve, and what we owe to ourselves.
