Chronicles of Border Warfare: Or, a History of the Settlement by the Whites, of North-Western Virginia, and of the Indian Wars and Massacres, in That Section of the State

First published in 1831, this is an invaluable primary source documenting the violent birth of American settlement in what would become West Virginia. Withers, a frontier physician and chronicler, gathered testimony from pioneers, settlers, and veterans to reconstruct the Indian wars that shaped the region: the raids, the sieges, the massacres, and the desperate battles that occurred along the western frontier of Virginia during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The narrative preserves names, dates, and local traditions that might otherwise have been lost entirely, offering readers an unfiltered look at frontier life where survival was precarious and violence was endemic. While written from the perspective of the settler community and reflecting the biases of its era, the book remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how this rugged corner of Appalachia was settled and the human cost of that expansion.
