Christmas Speakin' at Skaggs's Skule

The year is 1912. The setting is Skaggs's one-room schoolhouse, and Christmas is coming. When Miss Emmeline Elkins calls upon her students to speak their pieces at the annual Christmas entertainment, chaos erupts in the most delightful way. The bashful Billy Skaggs trembles at the thought of recitation, while giggly twins Matildy and Florildy dissolve into laughter at the slightest provocation. Rastus has memorized his lines so thoroughly he can no longer remember a single word. School board clerk Josiah Judd delivers proclamations with pomp that only he finds impressive, and the mothers hover at the back of the room, ready to rush forward at the first sign of tears. What unfolds is a tender comedy of childhood stage fright, where every stumble feels catastrophic and every small victory shines. Nearly a century old, this little play captures something universal: the nerves, the glory, and the magic of standing in front of an audience when you're still young enough to believe in Santa Claus. It's a warm, funny time machine to a world of kerosene lamps, memorized recitations, and the innocent joys of a rural schoolhouse Christmas.
