Christmas Roses

These aren't your grandmother's nursery rhymes. They're better. Written in the late 19th century by Lizzie Lawson, Christmas Roses gathers poems that treat childhood with startling tenderness and honesty. Here, children worry about whether Santa will visit the poor household, delight in their pet bunnies, and find wonder in falling snow. The collection captures Christmas magic as Victorians knew it: not as commercial spectacle, but as a season when the impossible becomes possible for one night. Each poem operates like a small window into a world where love arrives unexpectedly and poverty doesn't disqualify anyone from joy. These verses possess the particular warmth of coal fires and candlelight, of children gathered close while winter howled outside. They remember what it felt like to be small and believe absolutely in the season's promises. For readers tired of slick holiday content, these poems offer something rarer: genuine sentiment that hasn't been hollowed out by repetition.
