Children of Borneo

Edwin Herbert Gomes

1912

Archaeology & Anthropology, History - Other, Travel Writing

The jungle has a memory. That might be the way to understand this extraordinary document from 1912: as a preservation of a world on the edge of vanishing forever. Edwin Herbert Gomes spent years among the Dayak people of Borneo, and what he recorded was already becoming history even as he wrote it. He witnessed the final years of headhunting rituals, of traditional tattooing, of longhouse communities where spirits and governance intertwined. But Gomes also chronicled the arrival of James Brooke, the so-called White Rajah, whose colonial government steadily pushed the Dayak toward Christianity, education, and the abandonment of practices that had defined them for centuries. The book captures this tense moment: a people caught between their ancient ways and a modernity being imposed upon them, with all the violence and loss that entailed. For readers today, Children of Borneo offers something rare: a window into a culture that has been profoundly altered, if not entirely erased, by the century since. It is not an anthropological study but something messier and more alive: the observations of a missionary who both admired and sought to change the people he describes. The result is a complicated, sometimes uncomfortable, always fascinating portrait of encounter.
