Child's Story of the Bible

This is a portal to another era of family life. First published in 1898, Mary A. Lathbury's collection was designed for mothers to read aloud to their children, creating a shared ritual of faith and imagination. The stories move from the thundering drama of Creation through the patriarchs and prophets, building toward the quiet miracle of Christmas and the resurrection of Easter. Lathbury writes with a poet's ear for rhythm and a mother's understanding of what children can hold in their hearts. Her telling doesn't shy away from the serpent in Eden or the darkness of the cross, but she handles these truths with the gentle confidence of someone who believes children can bear witness to the deepest stories. The preface, addressed directly to mothers, reminds us that this book was never meant to replace scripture but to open doors to it. Over a century later, readers return to these pages not merely for the narratives themselves but for the particular quality of warmth and wonder they preserve.
