Chaucer

This 1879 biographical essay offers a window into Victorian literary scholarship at its most ambitious. Adolphus William Ward tackles one of English literature's founding figures, weaving together the scant documentary record of Chaucer's life with the turbulent history of 14th-century England. The essay navigates the real challenges facing biographers of medieval figures: fragmentary archives, competing claims, and the irreducible gap between the man and his work. Ward examines how the Black Death, evolving class structures, and the political upheavals of Richard II's reign shaped a poet who captured his era with unparalleled vividness. What emerges is not simply biography but a careful reconstruction of the world that made Chaucer possible, and the ways his poetry both reflected and transcended his moment. For readers interested in the history of English literature or the evolution of scholarly method, this essay provides a fascinating period perspective on the Father of English Poetry.
