Chapters on the History of the Southern Pacific

This is the serious business history the Southern Pacific Railroad always needed but rarely received. Written by economist Stuart Daggett in 1922, it deliberately abandons the mythology that surrounds American railroading in favor of rigorous analysis of the financial, political, and operational forces that built and shaped one of America's most powerful corporations. Where other writers romanticized the construction feats or ideologically attacked the company, Daggett digs into court reports, corporate records, private correspondence, and company documents to understand how the railroad actually worked as a business enterprise. He traces the involvement of Theodore Judah's Sierra surveys, the emergence of Leland Stanford and Collis Huntington as financial architects, and the complex web of capital, contracts, and competition that defined the Southern Pacific's trajectory. For readers tired of nostalgic mythology or partisan attacks, this book offers something rarer: an honest, evidence-based accounting of how the railroad actually functioned and why it mattered to American economic development.
