Caudebec in America: A Record of the Descendants of Jacques Caudebec, 1700 to 1920

In 1919, William Louis Caudebec completed a labor of love four decades in the making: a genealogical record tracing his family's extraordinary journey from 17th-century France to the settled valleys of upstate New York. This is not a dry family tree but a living portrait of American endurance, following Jacques Caudebec as he leaves Europe, negotiates land purchases from Native American nations, and establishes a legacy that stretches across two centuries to the modern era. The book opens with the family's coat of arms, a heraldic meditation on identity and belonging, then unfolds into something rarer: a personal quest to honor ancestors whose names might otherwise vanish from memory. Cauddeback weaves together meticulous research with genuine reverence, documenting not just births and marriages but the specific struggles of pioneer settlers carving lives from wilderness. For anyone who has ever wondered where they come from, this record offers a window into the particular magic of American genealogy: the moment when scattered descendants recognize themselves as part of a story far larger than any single life.
