Catholic Colonization in Minnesota: Revised Edition

A remarkable time capsule from 1879, this handbook was the practical arm of an organized effort to reshape American Catholicism. The Catholic Colonization Bureau published it to guide newly arrived immigrants away from the tenements of eastern cities toward the farmlands of Minnesota, where they could own property, build parishes, and create communities that blended religious identity with the promise of the frontier. The text is frank about its motivations: urban Catholic immigrants faced crowding, poverty, and cultural assimilation pressures, while rural land ownership offered economic independence and a bulwark against losing the faith. Reading it today reveals the calculating optimism of the era, the genuine anxieties of Catholic leaders about their flock's survival, and the extraordinary ambition of an institution that saw colonization as evangelism. This is essential reading for anyone interested in American immigration history, the Catholic experience in the Midwest, or the complex relationship between religion and the American dream.
