Catalogue of the Gallery of Art of the New York Historical Society
1915
This 1915 catalogue preserves a remarkable moment in American art collecting, documenting nearly three hundred paintings and sculptures housed by the New York Historical Society at the height of its prominence. Beyond mere inventory, it captures a vanished era of cultural patronage: the Reed, Bryan, and Durr collections, among others, represent private American fortunes spent on European old masters and contemporary works that once adorned Gilded Age parlors. The entries include artist biographical sketches, provenance details, and the names of donors whose identities shaped institutional taste. For researchers, collectors, and anyone curious about what America considered worthy of preservation a century ago, this catalogue serves as both a scholarly resource and a time capsule. It documents works that may have been lost, sold, or relocated while revealing the taste-makers and moneyed elites who defined cultural prestige in early twentieth-century New York. Art historians tracing provenance, historians studying American institutions, and collectors seeking to understand the lineage of dispersed collections will find this an indispensable primary source.
