Carlo: Or Kindness Rewarded
1827
This is a tender 19th-century fable about the rewards of compassion. Ida, a young girl of generous heart, witnesses a group of boys attempting to drown a small dog in the river. Without hesitation, she intervenes and saves the creature she names Carlo. Though circumstances separate them and Carlo becomes the companion of a wealthy boy named Eugene, the bond between them cannot be broken. Two years later, standing on the very bridge where she once saved him, Ida slips and falls into the water. Now a powerful dog, Carlo sees her danger and dives in to pull her to safety. The act of loyalty sets in motion a chain of events that leads Eugene's father to reward Ida's original act of kindness with a substantial gift, securing her future education. Written in 1827 and attributed only to an anonymous author, this is a gentle story that believes deeply in the moral logic of fairy tales: that kindness, once given, returns multiplied. For readers who believe that good people are rewarded and that loyalty deserves loyalty.
