Cardinal De Richelieu

The most dangerous man in seventeenth-century Europe was not a king. Armand Jean du Plessis, a sickly younger son of minor French nobility, transformed himself into the architect of a nation's power and the shadow ruler of France. This 1912 biography traces his remarkable ascent from obscurity to become chief minister to Louis XIII, the man who shaped the political destiny of a continent. Born in 1585 into a France torn by Catholic-Huguenot warfare, Richelieu clawed his way through the ecclesiastical hierarchy with calculated ambition, becoming bishop, then cardinal, then the indispensable advisor to a reluctant sovereign. Price illuminates the complex web of power: the bitter feuds with Marie de Médicis, the deadly court intrigues, the suppression of Protestant rebellions, and his ruthless campaign to break Habsburg dominance across Europe. What emerges is a portrait of pure will. Richelieu created the modern centralized state, founded the Académie Française, and manipulated European politics like a master chess player. He was feared, hated, and utterly indispensable. This is the story of how one man's ambition remade a nation and, arguably, the entire Western world.
