Captain Cook in New South Wales; Or, The Mystery of Naming Botany Bay

Published in 1901, 'Captain Cook in New South Wales; Or, The Mystery of Naming Botany Bay' by James Bonwick is a historical examination of Captain Cook's voyages, particularly the naming of Botany Bay. Bonwick scrutinizes the discrepancies in the narrative provided by Dr. Hawkesworth, who documented Cook's journey aboard the HMS Endeavour. The book analyzes various logs and accounts, arguing that the official narrative may not accurately reflect Cook's contributions and that the names associated with these locations were adopted later without proper attribution. This work is notable for its critical approach to historical documentation and its exploration of the complexities surrounding Cook's legacy in Australia.
