Canadian Battlefields, and Other Poems

At the heart of this 1899 collection lies a question every poet must face: what is worth singing? J.R. Wilkinson opens with precisely this inquiry, and the answer he constructs over these pages is both deeply personal and unmistakably Canadian. Through verses that move from the thunder of historic battlefields to the quiet reverence of nature, Wilkinson captures a young nation's struggle to define itself. He writes of love, of freedom's price, and of the land itself as a witness to both triumph and loss. The preface reveals an artist acutely aware of his own uncertainties, lending the collection an intimate vulnerability that elevates it beyond mere patriotic verse. These are poems written at the threshold of a new century, by a poet attempting to give voice to a country still finding its footing in the world. For readers interested in Canadian literary origins, Victorian poetry's quieter pleasures, or the formation of national identity through art, Wilkinson offers an earnest and often moving portrait of a nation coming into its own.
