Campaign of the Indus: In a Series of Letters from an Officer of the Bombay Division
Campaign of the Indus: In a Series of Letters from an Officer of the Bombay Division
These letters transport the reader into the heart of British imperial ambition in Central Asia. Written by an officer serving with the Bombay Division, they chronicle a military campaign that pushed European forces into territories last traversed by Alexander the Great. The writer documents the preparation and journey of British troops as they sail toward the Indus River, recording the army's composition, the punishing logistics, and the mounting tension with the Ameers of Sinde. Beyond the tactical details, the letters reveal the intimate thoughts of a soldier grappling with harsh conditions, unfamiliar landscapes, and the weight of empire. This is not a polished history but something rarer: an unfiltered dispatch from the frontier of British power, written in real time. For readers interested in primary sources from the First Anglo-Afghan War era, or in understanding how Victorian soldiers experienced imperial expansion, these letters offer a vivid, personal portal into a campaign that would haunt British military memory.
