It is regarded as one of the finest works in Peruvian literature and is part of the 'criollo' genre, reflecting the author's childhood in Pisco. The narrative, told in the first person, centers on an aging fighting rooster named Caballero Carmelo who faces a younger opponent, Ajiseco, ultimately winning but suffering fatal injuries. The story also explores themes of family life and the experiences of local fishermen.
