In the 1870s, an American diplomat stationed in Wales fell so deeply under the country's spell that he dedicated years to recording the oral traditions vanishing from its hills and valleys. Wirt Sikes was not Welsh by birth, but he became one of the finest custodians of Welsh folklore, transcribing tales told by farmers, shepherds, and village elders before the industrial age swept them away.
