Bristol: A Sketch Book

Step into early 20th-century Bristol through the loving gaze of an artist who saw magic in its cobblestones and spires. Dorothy Woollard invites readers to wander the streets of this historic English city, from the soaring elegance of St. Mary Redcliffe to the industrial wonder of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, from bustling markets to quiet churchyards thick with history. Each sketch captures not just architecture but atmosphere - the quality of light on ancient stone, the rhythm of daily life in parks and thoroughfares. These are portraits rendered with affection and precision, transforming familiar landmarks into something newly wondrous. Originally created as a personal record and artistic celebration, the book now serves as a precious time capsule - a vision of Bristol before modern development reshaped its face. For readers who find joy in wandering, who treasure books that transport them to specific places, who appreciate the patient observation of a skilled hand and attentive eye, these sketches offer both nostalgia and discovery.
