Brazilian Literature

Published in 1922, this landmark study represents one of the earliest comprehensive examinations of Brazilian literature by an American scholar. Isaac Goldberg undertook the ambitious task of tracing Brazil's literary evolution from its colonial origins through the early twentieth century, illuminating a tradition that had long lived in Portugal's shadow yet possessed a vibrant, distinct identity. The book explores how Brazilian writers gradually forged an authentic voice by weaving together Portuguese formal traditions, Indigenous storytelling patterns, and African rhythmic sensibilities. Goldberg pays particular attention to the colonial period's foundational figures, including the Jesuit priest José de Anchieta and the satirist Gregorio de Mattos, showing how their work planted seeds for later flowering. What makes this volume especially valuable is its 1922 vantage point: Goldberg was writing at precisely the moment Brazilian Modernism was erupting onto the scene, capturing a literary culture in the act of revolutionary self-definition. For readers seeking to understand how a national literature emerges from colonial roots to artistic maturity, this early American perspective offers both scholarly rigor and historical immediacy.
